Halloween has been the source of a lot of controversy within American Evangelical Christianity. Some people see it as a harmless tradition, while others refuse to celebrate it, claiming it’s “the Devil’s Holiday.” In this video, I trace the history of the holiday (it DOESN’T start with Samhain– it actually goes all the way back to ancient Rome) and try to explain why this celebration of the saints has become such a controversial topic in Christian circles. I learned a lot while researching this video (particularly the sections on Wicca and Satanism) and I hope you come away a little bit better informed about this largely misunderstood holiday.

I’d like to point out that very little has been written on Neopaganism or LeVayan Satanism since the late 90s or early 2000s. I guess that’s when the last dregs of the Satanic Panic died off (perhaps because 9/11 took all the news coverage?) Also, this list is merely meant to provide a sampling of the research I did for this video. It is by no means exhaustive, and if you’d like to learn more, I’d encourage you to do some research of your own!
