This story features a lot of names that will recur in Lovecraft's oeuvre. In a way, this story lays the bedrock for a lot of the mythos, in the sense that it features the distant past of Lovecraft's chronology. Sarnath, Ib, and the other civilizations mentioned in this story return in later stories set in contemporary times, usually in the context of arcane researchers trying to discover their secrets.
