This story is about the family history of Arthur Jermyn, recently deceased. Jermyn comes from a line of European explorers who searched out the interior of the continent of Africa. To Lovecraft and his contemporaries, the great horror in this story is miscegenation. He uses some racist imagery to make his point, though the fact that Jermyn is white undermines this somewhat in my opinion. (I'm trying to be vague so I don't spoil the story. This one's worth reading without knowing the ending.)
