This story is the first of Lovecraft's "dream narratives," wherein he explores the idea that dreaming is actually a doorway into a parallel dimension. In this tale in particular, a man is brought to a mental institution after a few episodes of sleepwalking that end violently. Eventually it is revealed that he is being possessed by an otherworldly creature from a separate dream-plane.
This story is also the first to feature the classist attitude that Lovecraft so often displayed; describing the rural man who is the 'vessel' of the dream creature in the story in animalistic and barbaric terms.
